September 2024 OSS paper round-up

In this instalment: BioSense for environmental sensing, a UV data logger, KRILLSCAN for estimating krill biomass and more!

Hi everyone!

It is time for another instalment of the monthly paper round-up for readers of the open source solutions feed.

I usually share these within the first week or two of the following month to allow search engines to index all the relevant papers. The short summaries are written by me without the use of any LLM. Please let me know if you spot any mistakes.

This is not necessarily an endorsement of any of the presented work and this list is not intended to be comprehensive. I collect these papers from multiple indexing sources. If you think I missed something good, please share below.

Now, enjoy the picks for September 2024!

September 2024 paper round-up

BioSense: An automated sensing node for organismal and environmental biology
BioSense is an open-source sensing node for on-board analysis of bird vocalisations and collection of other environmental data, including temperature, humidity and soil moisture. The system is based on a Raspberry Pi and supports wireless data transfer for local remote monitoring. One unit costs $500 to build.

An ultraviolet light data logger for studies of organismal ecology and physiology
This paper presents a UV data logger based on an Arduino Pro Mini. The total component cost is under $55, including a 3D printed enclosure.

KRILLSCAN: An automated open-source software for processing and analysis of echosounder data from the Antarctic krill fishery
This project lets you estimate krill biomass using echosounder data. KRILLSCAN is provided as a Python package and provides a graphical user interface for a user-friendly experience.
