What do you want to find in the Funding and Finance group?

The WILDLABS Funding and Finance group is now live at https://wildlabs.net/groups/funding-and-finance.

We have started publishing funding opportunities here, and we have ideas for a lot more than that. However, we would like to hear from you first.

So, please take a minute to drop a comment with what you’d like to get out of this group!

Think about questions like:

  • What kind of questions do you have regarding funding and financing your projects? (Feel free to ask them right away in separate posts!)
  • What information or resources would you want to find here?
  • What is your biggest headache in acquiring funding and/or finance?
  • What do you want to feel more confident about?
  • What kinds of speakers do you want to hear from in virtual events?

We will use your answers to chart and adjust the course of the group!

Thanks @Frank_van_der_Most for starting this!

As a complete newby to the world of conservation tech, I have many personal ideas for solutions to perceived problems - but how to better define them and get them to a point where funding could be applied for is still difficult.

My hope is that this group could help with clarifying and providing guidance on what could realistically be funded based on existing market trends so that ideas and projects can be prioritized. No need to work on looking for funding for items that have been proven to be unfundable, or simply not needed enough, in the current market.

Related to the above is then how best to get funding. Basically any starting points to the process would help - references to databases, sources, etc that could provide funding sources (as done for example in the  https://wildlabs.net/discussion/funding-camera-trap-projects thread), but also any samples of successful (and unsuccessful) funding approaches. Case studies, training opportunities, templates, and related topics that can help non-marketing or funding experts (like most average techies) to join in getting even a small share of the limited pie...

I'm in a similar boat as HeinrichS above. I want learn more about how funding is currently handled.

In addition, I'm also curious about:

  • Financing. Do projects get loans? If so, how are they typically structured?
  • Real Estate. I assume land comes into the finance conversation at some point (I know The Nature Conservancy buys land). What do these conversations typically look like?
  • Incentives. Back to the existing market trends - what kind of incentives do projects offer funders? What do funders usually expect? I'm volunteering with a non-profit that's incorporating Fiscal Sponsorship to incentivize donors.

Thank you, Frank. I would like to see ways to either automate funder/recipient connections or create a marketplace that can do the same. Some discussions or sessions on realistically implementing conservation finance that can leverage public and private funds for conservation projects would also be great.

Best,

Vance

Any experience, tips and tricks for using crowdfunding options to fund the following would also be useful:

  1.  Technology development (i.e. funding new devices, software etc via Kickstarter, Indiegogo, etc),
  2. Rollouts/implementations (funding use of technology and/or processes to meet a goal), and even
  3.  Large items like real estate purchases for example for range expansion
