Outreach Robotics (based in Canada) has been working on a new insect camera trap to fill a gap. Our focus was on portability, affordability, energy efficiency, and ease of deployment for large-scale monitoring projects. Here is the first release of the automated insect camera trap.

Main features:

-Fully waterproof enclosure

-Bright White Flash

-Select the timelapse frequency hh:mm:ss, and set multiple runtime periods of the day to save energy

-12V input (can run on a power pack or a car battery)

-12V or 5V output for LepiLED or other insect-attracting lights.

-micro SD card up to 512 Gb

-Ultra-efficient, low-consumption Sony camera with 48 MP resolution

We used to make our own wildlife cameras as well but then we took an arrow to the knee...


Have you collected any test data of insects on it? Would really like to see how good our own system is at recognising/sorting insects from your camera. Just in case, my email is eugene@animaldetect.com. 

Camera casings on the photo are 3D printed. Had a lot of moisture problem with them.

@Gcharron Are you linked in with @JoeBowden @mlarrivee and @drolnick ? This is a super cool design that looks like it could be easily deployed at low cost. My guess is that power is one of your main constraints? What is your 'normal' set up with power?
