Distance sampling: Analysis with R

4-week part-time online course for conservationists: Estimate species density and population size from line transects or point counts

Online Event
16 Sep 2024 - this event is in the past.

Benefits and outcomes:

  • Turn field data into a deeper understanding of species of conservation concern
  • Investigate species ecology, in particular the factors affecting population size
  • Analyse wildlife observations from line transect or point count data
  • Refresh skills you’ve learned in the past, and move beyond theory to analysis
  • Adapt your existing knowledge to the R programming environment in order to work effectively with colleagues or collaborators

This introductory course is ideal if you’re a complete beginner to distance sampling and/or R, or want to enhance your skills and understanding

The exercises, discussions and assignments will take 3-5 hours each week, and the timing is completely flexible - you can study whenever it suits you during the week

The course fee is 144 GBP with generous discounts available for students and those based in low- or middle-income countries.  Depending on your situation, you may be able to claim a fee reduction of 40% to 90%!  Complete our Discount enquiry form to find out the discount you're entitled to

We have two other courses on Distance sampling running this September/October:

  1. Theory and applications - suitable if you already have wildlife sightings from transects or point counts and need to gain insights from them
  2. Survey design - suitable if you’re planning a project which requires you to estimate species density/population size and the factors that affect it

This course includes Theory and applications as the first week. If you’re unsure which course is suitable for you, we suggest you register for the Theory and applications course, with the option to upgrade to Analysis and/or Survey design
