iNaturalist is a platform that allows recording of biodiversity observations anywhere in the world. It has models for visual similarity as well as geospatial models for over 100,000 taxa. Anyone in the community can contribute observations and help identify the taxa based on a the evidence provided. Collectively, the community creates research-quality citizen science data for science and conservation that is used extensively.
Anyone can use iNaturalist to create a project for advancing their own goals for biodiversity (e.g. an ongoing monitoring project for a park, a bioblitz at a school, specific behaviors or interactions, etc.).
iNaturalist regularly shares data at scale through GBIF and the AWS Open Data program.

This is my go-to app for identifying any living thing, but I love using it mainly because the observations I make can help real science! I have had a few researchers specifically use data I have contributed. How cool is that?!!?!
