✨ The Role
As Geospatial Scientist at Treeconomy, your primary objective will be to deliver world-class assessment of nature-based carbon removal projects (eg. reforestation), improving and extending the capabilities of our Sherwood platform for digital measurement, reporting, and verification.
You will help:
- Decrease the time taken to develop scientific capability in order to more quickly deliver data products to market
- Ensure rigour, scalability, and embrace of scientific best practice in our work
- Drive innovation and enhance Treeconomy’s standing as a science-first company that stands for quality and trust in nature-based solutions and environmental markets
Reporting to the Science Lead as part of our Science team, you will work closely with colleagues in Data Engineering and Product Engineerin
Your primary responsibilities will be to:
- Develop production-ready environmental analyses using multi-scale earth observation and remote sensing data
- Clearly communicate results and reporting on ongoing projects with scientific rigour, both to customers and internally
- Advance Treeconomy’s in-house expertise in forestry, environmental change, earth observation, remote sensing, geospatial data science and more
This is a remote-first position with a London-based company. Applicants should be located within 2 hours of UK time (GMT +/- 2hrs).
Required
- Deep mission fit: a sincere desire to work in climate and nature impact
- >2 years working in environmental monitoring and mapping applications
- MSc in Geospatial Sciences, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, Computer Science, or a related field (or its equivalent)
- Excellent practical skills in Python with particular focus on the geospatial tech stack
- Ability to thrive in a fast paced start-up environment
- Strong familiarity with geospatial data (raster, vector and point cloud) including expertise in geospatial data analysis, including manipulation, spatial statistics, and visualisation of geospatial datasets.
- Desire to own tasks from their conception through to completion
- Strong problem-solving abilities, with a capacity to work both independently and collaboratively
- Familiarity with cloud computing
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a knack for explaining complex scientific topics
Preferred
- Knowledge of LiDAR and drone-borne remote sensing methods
- Working knowledge of machine learning for regression and classification
- Working knowledge of nature restoration, ecology, forestry and/or the voluntary carbon and natural capital market
- Start-up experience
- Knowledge of SQL, POST-GIS etc. (cloud-native geospatial formats) or geoanalytics at scale
