Hi there,
I would like to get some feedback, insight into how practitioners manage and visualize their camera trap data.
We realized that there exists already many web based solutions such as Wildlife Insights, NaturalSolutions - EcoSecrets, AnimalDetect, Trapper, etc.
One one hand, there are open source tools that have a high technical bar to set up (docker image or script to run) but can be run locally on one's machine. On the other hand, some easy to access platforms like Wildlife Insights (owned and developed by Google?) where data privacy/security/ownership is a bit more complicated.
I am curious what people tend to use and if they consider that using a web platform is not possible due to data sensitivity?
I am asking this because we are in the process of prototyping a standalone application (open source) that can run on different OSes with @Jeremy_ at EarthToolsMaker.
Feedback is more than appreciated!
Cheers

A few links that may be helpful...
- This paper (just a few weeks old) asks many of the same questions you're asking, specifically for Australian users.
- This WILDLABS discussion thread describes a survey that we (myself and some other Google folks) conducted about some of the same questions you're asking. I say in big bold letters at the top of the thread that the results are extremely biased by the fact that we failed to break out of our social network that is much more likely, for example, to be using AI than a random subset of camera trappers.
- This list contains all of the camera trap data management and image review tools that I'm aware of. Let me know if I'm missing stuff!
Re: Wildlife Insights... I am not here to give you privacy advice or to sell you on Wildlife Insights :), but FWIW, Google is involved, but the WI platform is developed and maintained by the (primarily non-profit) partner network. Google builds the AI component (described in this paper).

Hi Arthur,
Nice to see you here! It's always great to see @dmorris feedback on these topics!
I have recently been involved with both TRAPPER and EcoAssist. I keep hoping that a majority of developers (and users) can get behind a common open source project.
My current focus is TRAPPER for the following reasons:
- Open source
- Already has a ton of camera trap data management functionality and more recent AI modules.
- Supports cloud service and local use cases
- Modularity enables new feature development (AI models, AI pipelines, and application functionality)
- Ability to pick and choose what modules to deploy for project needs.
- Support for a standardized data exchange format like Camtrap DP.
Currently, TRAPPER deployment can be challenging for non-technical users (EcoAssist handles this well for laptops/workstations). That is why the team is embarking on improving both deployment and usability (more details coming soon).
Could what you are working on be a module within an application framework like TRAPPER?
It would be great to broaden this discussion to see if we can get more community effort focused on a common framework/code base. I will add some of the developers and researcher I am aware of to see if we can continue this conversation:
- Developers: @kbubnicki (TRAPPER), @tkswanson (SDZWA AI models), @pvlun(EcoAssist)
- Researchers: @icorei (TRAPPER/U of Lodz), @mclapham (BearID Project), @russvanhorn (SDZWA), @rebeccazug (USFQ Carnivore Lab)
Regards,
Ed
