Planning a Gap Year

Hello, all! I've just deferred my Master of Engineering at Dartmouth (where I'll be studying electrical engineering) to take some time exploring opportunities in conservation and conservation tech first.

I'll be graduating from Amherst College this May with a math major, and I'm really eager to find meaningful experiences that could help me apply my quantitative skills within conservation technology. While I'm open to purely conservation-focused opportunities, I'd be particularly thrilled to find work that lets me leverage my math background in conservation tech contexts. I should also mention that I have a solid background in computer science!

A bit about me: I actually started college on a pre-vet track for my first two years and have a fair amount of conservation experience through my work at a wolf sanctuary in Colorado. I also completed a pre-veterinary medical internship throughout Costa Rica, which really opened my eyes to international conservation work. I studied abroad in Australia last year too, so I'm definitely excited about the possibility of work abroad!

If anyone knows of programs, organizations, or opportunities that might be a good fit—or even just has suggestions about where to look—I'd be incredibly grateful. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Hi Karinna,

That seems that a great plan and lots of nice skills to bring in!

Don't hesitate to search the member directory or the organisations inventory to find suitable place for you to go to. It really depends on what you would like to do and where you want to go (or can go).

Wishing you the best in your search.
