My name is Sarah Maagi, one of the ten participants of Women in Conservation Tech program 2023, cohort.
Following my last update in June, I have continued to improve my skills in spatial analysis using both GIS and R programming. I had the opportunity of participating in the Advanced GIS training organized by RISE–Grumeti Fund. This opportunity allowed me to deepen my knowledge and gain hands-on experience in spatial data analysis using ArcGIS Pro and R, as well as access to a one-year ArcGIS Pro license.
In addition, I successfully completed an ESRI MOOC titled "Going Places with Spatial Analysis", and earned a certificate upon completion. Throughout the six-week course, I developed a strong foundation in GIS concepts, data cleaning and organization, spatial data visualization, and advanced spatial analyses such as pattern analysis, hotspot analysis, density mapping, and value prediction through interpolation analysis, using a free access ArcGIS online provided by ESRI.
I have been applying these newly acquired skills in my work with the Research and Monitoring department at Grumeti Fund. Moving forward I would like to continue participating in other trainings and workshops so as I could further improve skills in GIS and R.
I’m especially grateful for being part of the 2023 WiCT program. My deepest gratitude goes to the organizers WILDLABS, RISE–Grumeti Fund, and Fauna & Flora International and to ARM, our generous donor, for supporting me with a computer. This essential tool has enabled me to complete these trainings and grow to be a masterly of GIS I am today.
