About Move BON
Movement is a key component of at least nine Sustainable Development Goals, fifteen targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and is a central tenet of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS). However, workflows to transform raw movement tracks into global conservation policy are highly underdeveloped. With the establishment of an Animal Movement Biodiversity Observation Network (Move BON), we aim to close this science-policy gap by developing an informed community of practice that will facilitate the integration of tracking data into environmental policy at national and global scales.
Core Aims of Move BON
- Enhance science-policy integration: Promote a shared understanding of the science-policy pipeline for movement data across aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial ecosystems.
- Coordinate with existing initiatives: Collaboratively pursue opportunities to close identified gaps in the information pipeline for movement data.
- Derive actionable insights for policymakers: Develop meaningful indices that explicitly link changes in animal movement with biodiversity outcomes at national and global scales.
- Operationalize solutions: Foster relationships with signatory countries to develop frameworks, build capacity, and create national-level case studies that demonstrate the value of incorporating movement-derived insights into decision-making processes.
Activities
- Introduced the Move BON Initiative at the World Biodiversity Forum in Davos, Switzerland in June 2024
- Introduced the Move BON Initiative at CBD COP 16 in Cali, Colombia in October 2024
- Held a technical workshop to develop movement metrics and indicators for ungulates in Front Royal, Virginia in November 2024
- Hosted the Move BON Development Workshop in Washington, DC in March 2025 (report coming soon!)
How to Engage
We will use the WILDLABS Animal Movement Group as a home for the Move BON community of practice to share updates and information and engage the broader sector. As a first step, you can:
- Watch a brief introduction to Move BON by @lhughey
- Get up to speed on global conservation policy frameworks through the lens of animal movement with our new series: Behind the Buzz: From Data to Decisions.
- Join an Interest Group!
- Find us in person at these upcoming events:
- Living Data 2025 : October 21-24, 2025
- Submit an abstract by May 20th to join our session! (Session ID 6803172)
- 2025 Movement Ecology of Animals Gordon Research Conference: July 27-August 1, 2025
- Living Data 2025 : October 21-24, 2025
