Advice needed for accessible acoustic monitoring

I am working on updating the Forest Integrity Assessment (FIA) tool https://www.hcvnetwork.org/library/hcv-screening-summary that helps managers (and other non-experts) monitor the state of their forests and promote action to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services. FIA has been implemented in many countries, but 'old-school' - usually, manual, paper-based - and that has made its uptake and utility limited. The HCVN (supported by WWF-NI and IKEA) want to update the tool to an accessible, mobile application with integrated suitable tech for monitoring biodiversity - such as PAM. HCVN member SEARRP have built a mobile app but not integrated biodiversity monitoring tech as yet so could potentially build on their developments. I need the Acoustics Group's advice on what is possible and practical as am totally new to this space, but have practical on the ground experience of what is needed and who could use it. I love to here your ideas

Hello Nev,

Can you please provide some more information on what support you need? There are several acoustic sensors that could be used to collect acoustic data (something that could be handled by local field teams, as deploying-maintaining acoustic sensors is typically easier than for camera traps). The data can then be analyzed to determine the presence of specific (vocal) species of interest. In Europe/North America, where the bird species are better studied and most are included in the ΒirdNet algortihm, one could quite easily create a community list of species present using available detection algorithms of a subset of selected species and maybe a crude relative abundance (of calls - not individuals) to serve as a baseline against which to monitor progress/impact etc. There are also tools for extracting logging/hunting pressure in an area from the acoustic data, if this is of interest. Do explain a bit more what kind of data would be useful, and I am sure we could provide as a group more targeted advice.

Best regards,

Christos
