Applied Bioacoustics in Conservation and Practice

This hands-on field course introduces participants to the principles and practice of bioacoustics in terrestrial ecosystems, with a focus on conservation applications. The course is designed for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners. It combines lectures, workshops, and field exercises to build practical skills in acoustic recording and analysis. Participants will learn to collect, process, and interpret sound data to monitor biodiversity and address real-world ecological challenges. Special emphasis is placed on applying these methods within Africa’s diverse and dynamic landscapes, using tools like Raven, BirdNET, and R.

🐘 Course Overview

Join us for an immersive, hands-on training course exploring the use of bioacoustics in terrestrial conservation. Designed for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners, this course equips participants with practical and theoretical skills to apply sound-based methods in biodiversity monitoring and ecosystem research.

Through field-based learning in one of Africa’s most iconic protected areas—Kruger National Park—participants will:

  • Learn how to deploy and manage acoustic recording devices
  • Analyze acoustic data for species detection and soundscape assessment
  • Engage with real-world conservation challenges through sound

This course places a special emphasis on practical, context-driven applications of bioacoustics in Africa’s rich and biodiverse ecosystems.

🏞️ Location

The course will take place at the Skukuza Research Station, home of the Skukuza Science Leadership Initiative (SSLI), located in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
