WILDLABS Behind the Buzz: Translating Science to Policy

Join us for the second event of Behind the Buzz: From Data to Decisions, where we explore global conservation policy through the lens of animal movement. In this event, experts Andrew Gonzalez and Aidin Niamir will join us to share insights into GEO BON and IPBES and how they support the translation of science to policy.

About the Series

Whether you’re part of the WILDLABS community, part of the Move BON Initiative, or simply eager to deepen your understanding, this series is your chance to explore and ask questions at the intersection of conservation data, technology, and policy. Navigating global policy as a scientist or innovator can feel daunting, but understanding these frameworks is essential for translating the science and data we generate into actionable insights for decision-making. Through open discussions where there are *no dumb questions* and bringing in experts who can help filter key information from the noise, we aim to make these concepts more useful and accessible to our community.

Event 2: Translating Science to Policy

Date & Time: Wednesday, February 5, 2025 10:30am-12:00pm ET

Note: We are starting this event 30 minutes early at 10:30 rather than 11am ET to allow more time for discussion!

About the Session:

How do the biodiversity data being collected across the globe inform policy, and what institutions exist to support this translation? Join us to learn more from two of the leading entities at the science-policy interface - the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Our expert speakers will address what these entities are, what they do, and how our community can best engage with them as we navigate the policy space.

Agenda:

  • Welcome and introductions (@TaliaSpeaker and @lhughey)
  • Andrew Gonzalez, Co-Chair, GEO BON; Professor, Liber Ero Chair in Biodiversity Conservation, McGill University; Co-Chair, IPBES assessment on biodiversity monitoring
  • Aidin Niamir, Head of Data & Knowledge Unit, IPBES; Head of International Science-Policy Unit, Senckenberg
  • Open discussion and community exchange
  • Take-aways and closing

Join us as we delve into these timely discussions, using animal movement as a unifying lens to ground our conversations and uncover new opportunities to integrate science with policy.
