We present a novel in-situ dataset for animal behavior recognition from drone videos, collected at the Mpala Research Centre in Kenya in January 2023. The dataset includes over 10 hours of video footage of giraffes, plains zebras, and Grevy’s zebras, annotated with seven behavior types and an occlusion category. This dataset offers a valuable resource for machine learning and animal behavior research, as it provides more realistic data for algorithm development compared to larger, online-scraped datasets. It also demonstrates a new curation pipeline for in-situ drone video collection and offers a test set for evaluating changes in fieldwork protocols for animal behavior studies.
