With experts across the WILDLABS community working with every type of technology and in every imaginable environment, our platform is a great place to find advice and resources on choosing what tools are right for your conservation project. Whether you're in the market to try a new camera trap model, want to experiment with drones for the first time, or need help weighing the pros and cons of data management tools, there's someone in the WILDLABS community who can help you make a smart and informed choice!
The Community Base is our general gathering group. It's the place where we cover more general, big picture topics in conservation technology - ones that don't fit neatly into our other groups. If you don't know where to post something, just post it in this group. Our moderators will move it if needed!
At our Community Base, you'll find updates from the WILDLABS team on upcoming events and opportunities, and have the chance to shape our programs and platform with your opinions. And most importantly, the Community Base is also home to our Welcome to WILDLABS thread, the best place to introduce yourself to us and the community. Stop by and tell us what you're working on!
Whether you're new to WILDLABS and want to know where to begin, or you're a longtime member looking for a handy bank of resources, our Getting Started on WILDLABS thread will be your one-stop guide to getting the most out of our platform.

Hi all. I’m the Environmental Professional Programs specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In my role I have the exciting privilege of supporting the next generation of environmental leaders, our MS students, in both the Environmental Observation & Informatics (EOI) and Environmental Conservation (EC) MS programs. My role focuses on graduate admissions and helping prospective students understand what our program offers and whether it’s the right fit for them.
We're always excited to help prospective students see how important conservation technology is in today’s environmental work.

Thank you for your feedback, Drea! Sorry for my late reply. I've been on holidays.
I understand the multiple channels problem and I will bring it to the discussion. The WildLabs team occasionally brings posts and other news to LinkedIn ( and I guess other channels ). However, systematically posting everything on linkedin might not fit WildLabs policies, I would guess. After all, the forum is here, not on LinkedIn
1 September 2025 3:09pm
Thank you for your feedback, Vance! It's good to know that you find all three useful. About your suggestion, that would be an amazing machine, right? One place for filling out all applications for all sponsors. People would pay for that, I guess. The Funding & Finance group leaders don't have the capacity for this, but if you're really interested, maybe you can post it as a question. There might be interest from other groups as well, like the Open Source Solutions, AI for conservation, and Software Development.
Sorry for my late reply. I have been on holidays

Hi Both!
Thanks for the feedback, I agree it would be nice to have the option for users to subscribe to some form of direct on-site/email notifications for new posts of specific content types or in groups they are interested in. We will definitively consider this for future development work, alongside our ideas for a tailored dashboard area where you can customise what content updates you see when logging into your account. Also (funding dependent) we want to split-off funding and careers into distinct pages with better interfaces so these are easier to find.
Currently the platform only provides a mini email digest of your unread on-site notifications, which triggers if you get a notification but don't log in to your account 24hrs. So if you get any new comments, reactions, messages, or comments on threads you are following, and you don't log into the site for a day, you will get an email summarising what has happened and a link back to login and check your notifications. (You can check this is enabled and adjust how many days trigger this under the permissions tab in your profile settings).
But for now yes you can filter by funding opportunities on the resources page, or the feed.

19 June 2025 12:19pm
Hello again sir - PACIMs really mean 'projects' is the way I see it. Each part of the acronym can be seen as a project (if you have an assignment to do, you have a project really).
As for your query on 10 projects in 'this' group - I should ask for clarification if you mean particularly acoustics or in any group (I see now this is the acoustics thread after I selected all the groups for this post). If you are asking on acoustics, you're right - I am unsure on 10 as I am not too keen on acoustics yet. If you are asking 10 projects as a whole like 10 projects in the funding and finance group - I believe 10 to be a very reasonable number. Our projects we have co-created are for the most part replicable, rapidly deployable, quickly scalable, fundable through blended finance and more.
Thank you again for the feedback.
19 June 2025 1:43pm
Thank you for your reply, Chad
I meant 10 as a whole, indeed. Perhaps you see your post in one group, but since it is tagged for all groups, I assumed you meant 10 in total.
In your first post you explain PACIM stands for "Projects, Assignments, Campaigns, Initiatives, Movements, and Systems", so I understood it as more than just projects. Obviously, many things can be packed into a project or called a project, but then, what does it mean that 'Projects' is part of the list?
Well, if you think 10 projects is doable, then don't let me stop you.

Thank you, Henry, and the WILDLABS team, for this excellent opportunity. 🙏
We at INITIAM ASBL (DRC) have just submitted our application with the project IDEPROCONA – Digital Innovation in Ecosystems for Protection and Conservation of Nature, which focuses on integrating drones, mobile apps, and community-based monitoring to strengthen biodiversity protection in the Virunga-Itombwe landscape.
Even though the call is now closed, I would like to acknowledge how relevant and visionary the Boring Fund is, as it highlights the often overlooked but essential aspects of conservation technology such as integration, scaling, and sustainability.
We look forward to learning from others in this community and to sharing updates from our work, regardless of the outcome of the call. 🌱🌍

I am looking forward to your reply and insights.

What questions would you ask an AI agent for conservation tech?
8 July 2025 5:49pm
21 July 2025 12:14am
I think a conservation tech agent would be most useful if it connects directly to existing WILDLABS resources, rather than trying to replace tools.
Ideally, it could Link questions to projects from the WILDLABS Awards or The Inventory, as well Suggest relevant forum discussions Recommend community members with similar experience. An then at the end propose technical solutions like ML models, devices, or toolkits for specific tasks
I'm thinking of doing something like...
prompt
"How can I detect when an insect is attacking a tree using dendrometer data?"
agent
This is a time-series event detection problem. Based on previous project in WildLabs a BiLSTM neural network can be trained to recognise attack patterns by analysing the sequence of stem diameter changes before, during, and after an attack. These patterns may include sudden shrinkage or irregular oscillations caused by stress or resin production.
The agent could then link to:
- Projects using sensors or time-series AI in behaviours or events monitoring
- Open-source tools for LSTM-based classification
- Forum threads or community contacts who’ve worked on similar topics, models, tools, etc
31 July 2025 3:59pm
I agree with Jorge that an AI agent could be useful to help search the vast repository of existing discussions on WildLabs. For example: in this thread below, Maristela could have asked her question to the agent and (hopefully) been directed to the link that Akiba mentioned.
However, one issue I can see with using an AI agent instead of asking a question as currently, is if there is no record of the questions asked to the agent. A great strengths of WildLabs (and online forums) is that, because questions are recorded and visible, other members can learn from others' questions. If questions start being "hidden" in the agent's memory, other members can hardly learn from them.

Hi fellow conservation technologists! Obviously I am posting on WILDLABS for the first time. I hope to get more active in the online community to gain broader insight into the conservation data landscape. I am working with the Conservation Technology Lab team at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance where we are currently partnering with Scripps Inst. of Oceanography to create a digital twin of our Biodiversity Reserve. It is the hope that we can eventually model this concept for use by our global partners. Happy to hear from any of you that might be working on digital twins to support conservation.
