With experts across the WILDLABS community working with every type of technology and in every imaginable environment, our platform is a great place to find advice and resources on choosing what tools are right for your conservation project. Whether you're in the market to try a new camera trap model, want to experiment with drones for the first time, or need help weighing the pros and cons of data management tools, there's someone in the WILDLABS community who can help you make a smart and informed choice!
The Community Base is our general gathering group. It's the place where we cover more general, big picture topics in conservation technology - ones that don't fit neatly into our other groups. If you don't know where to post something, just post it in this group. Our moderators will move it if needed!
At our Community Base, you'll find updates from the WILDLABS team on upcoming events and opportunities, and have the chance to shape our programs and platform with your opinions. And most importantly, the Community Base is also home to our Welcome to WILDLABS thread, the best place to introduce yourself to us and the community. Stop by and tell us what you're working on!
Whether you're new to WILDLABS and want to know where to begin, or you're a longtime member looking for a handy bank of resources, our Getting Started on WILDLABS thread will be your one-stop guide to getting the most out of our platform.

Building on Frank's comments, I'd also think about including some conversation about the ethical use of technology - Trishant's talk at Tech Tutors a little while ago sparked a really important conversation here in our community, one that would be valueable to have with your students.

Hello,
Thanks for your comments both, and the information, this is really helpful. I agree correct use and validation is so important here. And thank you for the contact for Kate, the course looks really interesting.
Thank you for your offer, Frank, I'll send an email through.
Best,
Emma

It would be great to address data collection, handling and storage. It starts with keeping good records of field deployments so that devices can be refound and helps at the time of analysis and reporting and so studies can be reproduced. Having an understanding of metadata standards for data types as these are often overlooked when projects are starting up. Knowing if there are existing databases or repositories for your data or if you will have to 'roll your own' (something more than an Excel spreadsheet, or at least knowing the potential pitfalls of relying on spreadsheets). That would be a great advantage when entering the workforce and working in this field.

Hi Frank,
First of all my apologies, I thought I replied to your suggestion about a couple of weeks ago, but looks like it didn't go through!
Thank you, I am already interviewing people at WildHub and it has been very interesting.
My work does relate to technology, but to the aspect of adoption of new innovative solutions and tools. In this context, I would love to talk to professionals who have worked on "citizen science" projects with local communities. Potentially also wildlife monitoring technologies that are meant to be used by local communities beyond the scope of a particular program or funded research. Please let me know if you have any experience in this area or feel free to suggest anyone who might have and would be open to share some reflections :-) Thank you!
17 June 2024 4:42am
Hi Yanna,
No worries about the delay. Good that you already had found WildHub
I'm afraid that I cannot help you any further with concrete contacts ... uh ... well, it is a long shot, but in early 2020 Osa Conservation was trying to get their visitors ( and who knows, also the local population ) to participate in iNaturalist. Don't pin me on this, but I vaguely remember there were some token 'prizes' for x, y or z observations, like stickers or so. Also, I don't know if it was Osa Conservation's own campaign or that it came from iNaturalist.
cheers
Frank

Thank you Frank for your comments! And no worries, any pointer to info might lead to something relevant, I will google it through ;-)
