Software plays an increasingly vital role in conservation, helping to protect and manage biodiversity through innovative technological solutions. It also facilitates collaboration among researchers, local communities, and governments, empowering them to develop sustainable conservation strategies. However, many of us working in conservation tech don't have the benefit of a large team of software experts to collaborate with or bounce ideas off of. We aim to change that.
This group is for anyone interested in applying software to conservation and wildlife research. Whether you're a developer eager to contribute to conservation or a newbie with valuable data and ideas but limited software experience, this group connects people with diverse expertise. It provides a space for asking questions, sharing resources, and staying informed about new technologies and best practices. We are also committed to supporting technologists and conservationists from the Global South, ensuring that everyone has access to the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully.
Our goal is to foster collaboration and avoid "reinventing the wheel" by sharing solutions, whether it's an application, design approach, or a simple script. We also aim to lower barriers to entry by offering mentorship and guidance and providing feedback on technical ideas. This supportive community is a place to learn, connect, and contribute to the advancement of conservation through software. Whether you're looking for software and mobile app developers to help you with your conservation tech needs, have questions about development, are looking for resources, or would like to share your own app, software, or gaming tools, this is the group for you!

Have a look at CyberTracker:
CyberTracker - CyberTracker
Conservation software for mobile data capture and visualization, helping to develop a Worldwide Environmental Monitoring Network.
I believe you can probably set up something to use as a behavioural log to export as .csv or similar.
On the hardware side I would look at a Samsung X cover series or CAT and would probably invest in battery banks as power backup.
19 January 2023 5:06pm
If Cybertracker is not suitable, try Claris Filemaker
Not for free ( but your university may have a license already ), but allows you to design your own apps on phones ( iOS only ) and desktop. You'll get a low-code relational database software. Very easy to get started and there is a very active support community for all your questions. FileMaker Go ( for free ), the software to install on the phone, has easy access to GPS, compass and other phone sensors.
For the phone-part you'll be limited to iOS, but I find them good. Just now, I tried the screen of my iPhone 12 mini, and an iPad pro in full sun ( at 11 AM in Costa Rica ), which works fine ( not excellent, but I doubt that exists, unless you use something with e-paper ). Please be aware that full sun is not good for any electronics.
For the desktop part, FileMaker is available for Mac and Windows.
Please note. I am a FileMaker developer myself, so I have an interest ;-) But even if I wasn't I would have mentioned FileMaker here since I used it a lot for my own research before I became a developer

Depending on the type of data you're needing to collect, the EarthRanger or SMART platforms might be helpful. They each have mobile apps but also a suite of integrated software to facilitate analysis, reporting, data mgmt, etc.

If you have a server and can host a solution, install on the server your own instance of Next Cloud, Pydio or similar - it's exactly what you need without reinventing the wheel.
23 October 2022 8:25am
Strongly supporting the Nextcloud/owncloud suggestion -
apart from bringing everything you list in your requirements, it would give you a lot of features that might be useful as the project grows (versioning, failover for lost/failed data, sharing, ..)
Available for more advice, if needed.

Hi Adam!
I mostly live within the ecoacoustics space so I'll just speak on the hydrophone part of your request; Arbimon is a free web/cloud-based platform with unlimited storage for audio files. We've got an uploader app as well for mass-uploading lots of files. There's also a bunch of spectrogram visualization/annotation tools and analysis workflows available. It's AWS running under the hood.
I have some experience working directly with AWS & Microsoft Azure, and I've found personally that AWS was more user-friendly and intuitive for the (fairly simplistic) kinds of tasks I've done.
