The Women in Conservation Technology Programme (WiCT) supports early career women conservation technologists around the world. Launched in 2022, we've collaborated with Fauna & Flora International (FFI), Ol Pejeta Conservancy (OPC), Arm, and the Grumeti Fund to foster, empower and develop women conservation technologists and leaders in Kenya and Tanzania to advance and strengthen conservation impact. The programme supports women who are recognized as key conservation stewards to grow their skills, knowledge, and networks to then apply them in their own work and eventually mentor others in both their host institutions and in future cohorts to come.

GPS collars for domestic dogs

Hi Stephanie, at https://Savannahtracking.com we develop and manufacture a variety of collars with sizes ranging from about 95 grams for Raptors, 200grams - 1200g for mammals, and collars for large mammals such as Elephants. We currently have collars deployed on Dingoes which are about the same size as domestic dogs, and I believe that a similar solution will be perfect for your needs.
Our GPS collars can be programmed to collect high resolution data (15-minute gps positions) with hourly uploads via iridium satellite to our server where you can view and download the data from our dedicated windows or MAC SDM platforms. We also have a view only android/ios app. All our collars have two-way satellite communication, Internet based downloading via the free accompanying Savannah Tracking data manager software, automated Google Earth links for visualization, fully user definable geo fencing allowing for point, line and polygon fences and automated app and mail alarms in case of zone violation.
Kindly reach out to us and we can discuss a bespoke solution for your tracking needs at info@savannahtracking.com

Climate changes in wildlife protected areas

Hi Norah!
This is a great concern! Kudos!
Climate change data especially for such a long time can help us answer a lot of questions including the few listed below:
- How has the climate variability affected the trend of species in the ecosystem? (You can choose to study a specific specie of animal or plant) and respond on their increase and (or) extinction.
- How has climate variability affected or supported the survival rate of introduced species?
- Climate variability is one among many factors of invasion, how is the invasion rate in your ecosystem?
- You can also answer on the general topic of your ecosystem’s health with the data!
I would love to read a paper from the data you have! Very resourceful!
Break the leg!

@Norah, I am also interested in the findings regardless of the species you pick. In 2022 - 2023 we created a climate database for an NGO project in Amhara, Ethiopia. It would be cool to come up with a climate variability databasa for the park.

Effect of Climatic change on Animals "LIONS🦁"
29 August 2024 5:12pm
30 August 2024 9:27pm
Hello Nora.
Hope the information below will be usefull.
Climate change impacts lions’ physiology by causing extreme heat stress, which can lead to dehydration, impaired metabolism, and overall health issues. Reproductive physiology is affected as heat stress may reduce fertility and impact pregnancy and cub survival. Lions' immune systems can weaken due to increased disease risk, while behavioral changes, such as becoming more nocturnal to avoid heat, can affect their energy and nutrition. Additionally, reduced prey availability due to climate change can lead to malnutrition and poor body condition.
And in the side of young male and female, young male lions are particularly vulnerable as their higher energy expenditure and roaming behavior expose them to greater risks from climate impacts, including decreased prey and water availability. In contrast, young female lions face challenges related to reproductive health and cub survival. While both sexes are affected, young males are more prone to the negative effects due to their solitary lifestyle and increased conflict risks.

What are your parameters? Do you need yes no movement, which could be collected with an accelerometer and no lat-long data?
Movement on an XY grid once an hour within a tightly bounded area?
High resolution once per second data? Large geographic area?
Different technologies deliver ddifferent datasets. Sometimes, significantly!
